The Martyrdom Day of Sri Guru Arjun Dev Ji is a provincial Gazetted holiday in the Indian state of Punjab celebrated on the 24th of Jeth, the third month of the Sikh calendar. This means that it occurs in May or June according to the Western calendar.
This event, also known as Martyrdom Day of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, celebrates the first Sikh martyr, who was murdered in 1606.
When is Sri Guru Arjun Dev Ji’s Martyrdom Day?

This event, also known as Martyrdom Day of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, celebrates the first Sikh martyr, who was murdered in 1606.
Sri Guru Arjun Dev Ji’s Martyrdom Day
Guru Arjun Dev was born in Goindval, India, in April 1563. His father became Guru Ramdas, while his mother was Mata Bhani. Guru Amardas, Arjan Dev’s maternal grandfather, and his father, Guru Ramdas, were the third and fourth Sikh Gurus, respectively.
- After his father died in 1581, he became the fifth Guru of the Sikhs.
- Guru Arjun lay the groundwork for Amritsar’s Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib). He also built the four doors of a gurdwara, or Sikh temple, saying, “My faith is for the people of all castes and creeds from whichever direction they come and to whichever direction they bow.”
- He also stated that every Sikh should give away a tenth of their earnings to charity.
- His lasting contribution to the Sikh faith was compiling all of the previous Gurus’ works into a single volume – the sacred scripture: the Guru Granth Sahib.
- Guru Arjun Dev included compositions by Hindu and Muslim saints that he thought were consistent with Sikhism and the Gurus.
In 1606, the Muslim Mughal Emperor Jahangir issued a 200,000-rupee fee and ordered that Guru Arjun remove some hymns from the book that he felt offensive. The Guru was tortured and executed because he refused to remove the lines and pay the fine, according to Sikh legend.
This festival is traditionally marked by a thorough reading of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. A procession with the Sri Guru Granth Sahib is also held on occasion, and sweets are distributed to the general public outside gurdwaras.
