India successfully landed a spacecraft on the Moon’s south pole on Wednesday, demonstrating the nation’s burgeoning technological and space capability in an unknown region where scientists think there may be significant frozen water and rare element supplies. At 6:04 local time, a lander with a rover inside touched down on the lunar surface, eliciting cheers and acclaim from the space experts present in Bengaluru, in southern India. India succeeded in landing on the south pole for the first time, joining the United States, the Soviet Union, and China as the only other nations to have done so after a failed effort nearly four years prior.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-NqXkjkqhU
According to India’s UN representative, the country is aiming for the moon and has “limitless possibilities” for humanity.
India’s Permanent Representative Ruchira Kamboj stated, “By shooting for the moon, India has not only reached it, but has also set our sights on the boundless possibilities that lay ahead (and) as the adage goes, “To infinity and beyond.”
She went on to say that while the Chandrayan-3’s successful moon landing “symbolises the aspirations of 1.4 billion Indians,” it’s also “a historic moment for humanity as we venture into uncharted territory near the moon’s South Pole.”
The fact that India is the first nation to set foot on the moon’s South Pole, when many others have failed thus far, is what really stands out, she said.
